12th week

On my final wooden sculpture I felt at this point I had my technique where I wanted it to be. Some scrap wood that I used were previously used in my other face sculptures. Once completed I noticed the facial expression looked menacing compared to the rest. Which is why I blowtorched it to the extent that I did.

11th week

Before making my fourth sculpture I wanted to go big with my previous three sculptures that I have made, by essentially making full body sculptures. But after the in class critique majority of the people enjoyed the head sculptures by themselves. After much thought I decided to continue making these wooden head sculptures because I enjoy making them and the positive feedback I have received. On this sculpture I wanted to still use my freestyle approach on constructing it. When I completed this sculpture I decided that I wood add a saw dust and wood glue mix to the sculpture to create a different texture.

10th week

This sculpture I added a platform for the head to work as shoulders. The reason for this is because I'm trying to make it bigger in scale.
This sculpture I originally dropped it on accident and had to fix the mouth of the head and the top piece of the sculpture.
This sculpture indid much of the same to the other one by adding a platform to the base of the head for the same reasoning as shoulders for making it a larger scale.

9th week

[Block Prints of my 3 wood sculptures]
This week I wanted to create a wood black print of my 3 wood sculptures to bring them into a 2D world from a 3D world. I wanted it be along side the wood sculptures during the final exhibit show. From the critique that I got from the class was very positive they saw the similarities with the print and the sculptures saying that they both contain gesture. Also there was comparisons to Pablo Picasso and his cubism technique in his paintings. I got useful feedback into how I can implement these prints into other works like my abstract paintings, printing them on wood, or printing them using colors that are similar to the colors that are in the three wood sculptures. I'm will use this feedback that was given into my work because it will strengthen the process and will create a stronger outcome that I essentially had.

8th week

             [Wood Head Sculpture#3]
This is the final installment of my head sculpture series I have been working on. I tried to use more wood for the structure of this head sculpture, making it my heaviest one. While creating this I was pushing to creat a head that looked somewhat evil but while working in this process it turned out to look more happy and not intimidating. As for this in the future along with my other head sculpture I will be trying to construct a body for them but not to sure on the scale I'm going to do. While working on these in the wood shop Russell has told me that this is somewhat similar to Folk Art. Remarks that I got were similar to the previous weeks where there was a lot of gesture and how it can relate to characters in pop culture. Also they agreed with me on making a body for these head sculptures and work big in scale

Austin Markis Manifesto

1. I make art for myself, I look for some sort of snot mentions sense of meditation.
2. An artist is anyone that creates for themselves and hopefully the enjoyment of others. The artist's role into society varies, but in the grand scheme of things it's to depict the representation of what the artist is living in.
3. I have an affinity for the art created in the Renaissance era. I'm not acting into opposition but I am working into try and understand today and implementing into my work.
4. The thing I owe the viewer is my honestly that is protracted into my work, so the viewer can hopefully see what I see so they can somewhat understand where I'm coming from.
5. My work expresses with most of what's above, but I am continuing to find my self with my artwork I want to continue to grow mentally to better my art
6. My concerns outside the art world is basically everything in life there are a lot of things that I want to accomplish but I believe there is not enough time to get it all completed, so the fear of time is probably my biggest fear. Peace of mind is very important to me because with out that then how can living be sane. Well with time when creating art work for me is limitless unless there is a time constrain because I believe that I can put in as much time in my art until I am satisfied with what I am making. With peace of mind that is very important in my work because if I am not at peace then it shows into my work because I am not at my best mentally.
7. The people that should be concerned with art is the artist and the people who actually enjoy art and the process of what went into making any art works. To me art is priceless especially if I make it because no amount of money can tell me how much that art work is worth. We need art for the fact that some art works bring emotion to the view once gazing at it so most people would want to contain that work so they can always get that feeling once gazing upon it. I expect people to give a damn about my work because I want people to feel some type of way about my work I want people to feel the same way I do especially when I make something that is personal to me.
8. I personally enjoy other people's work because I normally respect the process of what ever they did to get the final outcome, gazing at people's work always makes me wonder on why and how they got there and what they feel about their work. I normally express it by being silent because I don't want to say anything that could devalue their work and I know I need to work on that.
9. It is important to communicate through my work because I would like to create a conversation with the viewer.
10. What I discovered as of late I like to add new materials and different processes into work so I can have a wide range variety of skills when creating art work. So simply yes I do think it's essential to me as a artist on what material or process that I decide to go into because I want to experience as much as I can to better myself.
11. My work is relevant to where, when and how I live because I want to portray myself as much as I can into my work and I believe it is very important because I'm being honest with myself and with the viewer.

7th Week

                 [Wooden Sculpture]
For this week I continued on what I made the following week before hurricane Matthew hit, which was an abstract wood sculpture of a head. During that creation process I had no idea that I would be constructing a head it just became its own. However, for this week I had in mind wanted to create a head of some sort due to the face that I had great success prior. I used the same tactics but wanted to highlight more gesture into this piece. I got great feed back on this piece from fellow classmates telling me to continue into this direction because of how great these sculpture are turning out, and I will definitely continue into this direction for weeks to come. I like how people were telling me that the head embodied different character in pop culture today such as batman and the Iron giant.

6th Week

On this project I did something that I normally do not do for the fact that I did not have the normal materials that I would use. The card board material depicts six cartoon characters that I enjoyed as a kid growing up. I got this idea from looking at a piece called "Dogs Playing Poker" by the artist Cassius Marcellus Coolidge. After I completed drawing the characters with pencil on the card board I then traced it with a black fine point ink pen, and then colored in the characters with colored pencil. I then grasped the back and placed it on a black canvas. I wanted to incorporate playing cards into my work so I decided to to gessoed the back of the cards and placed them around the drawing to somewhat frame it.
