5th week

                  [Wood Sculpture]
For this piece I at first had no idea what I wanted to do, I just knew I wanted to make a sculpture. I looked at artists for reference like David Hammons, Pablo Picasso but did not want to emulate their style of work into mine. I then tried to put my painting style into my sculpture which is abstract and free flowing. Making this sculpture I randomly was placing them nailing pieces of wood together to for form a structure with various shapes of wood and different kinds of wood. Starting out I didn't know what the final outcome would be because it was some what of an experiment, so once I noticed that it was forming into a head I kind of went into that direction giving it eyes and a nose. Also, what I started to do during the process of making this sculpture was creating shapes within the sculpture ranging from almost anything. During the critique I got great feedback for example that there was gesture in my sculpture and how it was similar to my painting that I did during the previous week. With this positive feedback I am going to continue to make these sculptures.
(Sharon Hill by artist Nick Edmonds, which inspired me not just this piece but all of his wood sculptures)
                  [Woodblock Print]
On making this Woodblock print I had to create a design that would resemble the work of my fellow classmate's Nikki. Nikki usually makes these creatures, the one she made during the first week was a painting with two black figures with no background. During the second week she created two distinct creature with human qualities on the a white canvas so it was as if they were floating, well to me any way. The third week she constructed out of wood a panel that contained a green creature with wings and a wicked smile. On the fourth week she brought her creatures to life by sculpting a small creature and had it attached to a straw that was contained in a glass. One thing I did notice about her work is that she progressively brought here creatures to life step by step. At first I wanted to continue with what she already had going on by sculpting a creature. However, I thought about what would I do? I came to the conclusion of making a block print for the simple reason that she had not made one yet. For the beginning stages I doodled some creatures and picked the best one I thought represented her body of work. Once I had my creature I drew him into the wood and proceeded to carve the wood; then eventually printing it onto paper with black ink. I'm glad Nikki enjoyed it and said that it could fit with her collection of creatures she has created. It felt that I had accomplished the task.
